TROOP 3 VISITS THE GREAT SALT PLAINS 5/1/2004

The Great Salt Plains in NW Oklahoma is a different and interesting location. Nate's Scout Troop 3 visited the location on May 1st. The description below is from the Great Salt Plains Association which has lot of information about the location beyond selenite crystals. We arrived on the evening of the 30th and there were sever thunderstorms. This caused the plains to appear brown in the morning and then gradually turn white as surface water receded and evaporated. One thing I have always noted on the plains is the intense winds.

The Salt Plains are a vast expanse of mud, completely devoid of vegetation, located in north central Oklahoma. The name, Salt Plains, is derived from the this layer of salt which covers the flats. The Salt Plains were formed millions of years ago by repeated flooding of sea water that became trapped in the area. The water evaporated leaving large deposits of salt. This salt was used by Indian tribes and early pioneers who first settled the area. The plains are seven miles in length and approximately three miles wide and lie within the boundaries of the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1930, the refuge is an important feeding and resting area for migratory waterfowl and endangered species. The plains border the Salt Plains Reservoir which was constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1941.
